Sword Modifying, or how to make a sword fit just right for you, is definitely an art form in itself. However this art form is not to difficult to learn which is lucky as it really is required to do for most store brought Tai chi swords, steel or wooden sword alike.
"Use good tools and use them well"
Good technique is half the picture, as having good Tai chi sword is the other.
You can not expect, and I am sure know one does expect a fencer with a wooden sword to be as skilled or as careful as those using real swords. That is not to say that the wooden sword does not have it's place in the beginning stages of learning Tai chi sword. But that to take the double edged sword to the next level it must fit the following criteria.
The Steps On How To Make A Sword Fit Just Right
- Balance : The First and main requirement is to balance the double edged sword. This is essential for good practice and to enhance the students progress.
- Integrity : Then we need to ensure the over all integrity of the Tai chi chuan sword. The blade, guard, handgrip, and pommel need to be and stay aligned, no matter the practice situation.
- Sharpness : The blade needs a proper edge. A sharp sword instills a similar quality in the person wielding it. Don't you think?
Balance, integrity and sharpness are the critical attributes required by the sword and the student of the Tai Chi sword to progress.
